Self Care for Students

 Self Care for Students

Being a student can be an exciting and transformative time. However, it also comes with its fair share of challenges and pressures. Balancing academic responsibilities, social life and personal responsibilities can often leave students feeling overwhelmed and stressed.  This is where self care becomes crucial and in this article, we will explore the benefits of self care for students, the importance and provide practical tips to make the most out of self care practices.

Benefits of self care for students:

Reduces stress

Taking time to carry out healthy practices such as exercising, being mindful and any activity that brings you joy which allows you to gather calmness, reducing stress and allowing you to collect your thoughts. You conserve energy and feel more relaxed.

Improves focus and concentration

Taking the time for self care activities like improving sleep or exercising enhances cognitive function. This means that memory, concentration, focus and other complex brain activities are at a better advantage, which improves your overall performance.

Improved relationships

By practicing self care, there is an improvement in mindset which leads to better communication, setting boundaries and engagement in healthier relationships. These relationships can be with a partner, a friend or family. All of this positivity affects relationships in your life.

Increased productivity

When practicing self care, you recharge your energy which means it can be distributed to the tasks you want to do, increasing productivity and work efficiency. This results in better academic performance, leading to higher grades and better quality of work.

There is a lot of importance for students to be practicing self care and these include:

Preventing burnout

Balancing studies and lifestyle

Improving mental and physical health

Increasing emotional resilience

Increased Self Esteem

Cultivating life skills

Practicing self care should be a non negotiable part of your routine. This can be practiced through scheduling in a time for self care. For me, personally, I enjoy doing my routine in the morning, but this does not go without saying that I do incorporate other parts of my routine as the day progresses such as increasing my water intake. Everyone is different so it is all about discovering what time works out best for you. You can find inspiration from many YouTube videos on the topic of self care and incorporate some routines they do into your daily life.

You can also seek support. This can look like reaching out to a friend, utilising campus resources/ support workers at university or even finding an accountability partner. An accountability partner is someone who keeps you on track with your goals, keeping you committed by sending reminders and offer kind words of support to encourage you to achieve your goals. This can help you stay committed to your self care routine.

Whatever your self care routine may look like, ensure that it promotes growth and health to your lifestyle. Remember the benefits of self care and the importance that it provides. You are worthy of reaching your full potential and it is possible.
